I agree with much of what you said Don. The Me First - I am Entitled
Generation does not, in general understand having to actually WORK for
something and EARN it. And, we are a part of that problem.
But, that aside.......
If the Corporate CEO's, whose skills have been honed on how to screw the
consumer and make more money for the company and themselves, at ANY PRICE
we WOULD be better off.
If they took their tax breaks and actually reinvested in their machinery,
and productivity they would make more money for less expense and be able to
lower prices and up paychecks for the WORKERS.
But, corporate greed is at the highest ever. We have not learned the
lessons from Enron and the like.
We here in Nevada are STILL paying Enron for electricity we never got and
will never get. Even the recordings showing they manipulated prices in our
'regulated' electric rates and laughed about it, we have to pay.
The oil companies are making more money then ever. Why is the price not
reduced? The price of a barrel of oil is going up because it can. The oil
companies are not hurting. They are making more money each year! They are
having a higher % of profits and they do NOT cut back on anything. The
corporate bosses make more money and the government gives them tax breaks to
reinvest to get more oil.
Ok.... I will stop on the government helping B I G Business!
Why do these CEO's and higher echelon not have a ceiling of how much they
can make and how many benefits/bonus' (trips, cars, vacation homes, parties,
etc) should they be ENTITLED to?
Then you have companies like Cheney's got a piece of, that moves out of the
country and they are making money hand over fist in Iraq and elsewhere.
Yes, we need to develop a good worth ethic in our children.. But we need to
have good corporate models that do something besides make money....without a
commiserate amount of work.
Being powerful should NOT automatically mean you are entitled to be rich and
make more money than an entire neighborhood of your workers,
In Japan and elsewhere, the guy at the top can only make a certain
percentage more than the average worker. There is a thought....
If there were not so many illegal workers here not having any insurance,
having us pay for their medical, welfare and educating their children and
making us PAY to send notices in THEIR language maybe we would have more
legal workers with better paying jobs. If you eliminate the money spent on
paying for illegal immigrants, their salaries are not so low.
We recently got ripped off on some work we had done in our home. His wife
ran a store that sold tile and he installed it. They guy gave us a license
# and we called the BBB and they got had a good record. The name of the guy
was the name given to us. I talked to a long time (20+ yrs) friend who had
a business next door and they gave a good recommendation on the tile work
done for them.
They guy was an illegal immigrant who had been here for years. They had
their 9th child while he was doing tile work on my home. It turns out they
were angry as the business (store) they had, they listed when she signed
papers at the hospital. This was the first baby they had to pay for and
they were MAD! They had one daughter in special academic classes and she
got to go to a special prep school and got everything for free while the
other kids' families (legal residents and citizens) had to pay through the
nose for uniforms and books, etc.
This guy actually called Mexico to get workers to come up and do the work
for him. When some got caught and sent back, he was pissed and had to call
for more workers. He had them housed in a small house and gave them enough
money to eat and get gas to get to work. Then, he would send money to their
families in Mexico for them. This guy was getting paid the regular rate for
the work. And, as it turns out.... the work was not all that good. I still
have things that were not finished correctly..and gee..the store closed down
over night..and he cannot be located.
But, I thought I saw him recently in a store, but he moved quickly when he
saw me and he was gone! This guy IS not an anomaly.. he is not the majority
either...but... there are too many of these kinds of folks around doing this
type of thing. And...no one can get anything done.
Where are MY rights?
It has long been said, this country's strengths. (Freedoms & rights) .. are
its greatest weaknesses.
We are killing our own golden goose!
We need to develop a better moral set of real ethics and have to live by
them. We need to stop glorifying athletes and paying them millions and
millions and giving them a break on everything in life.
Those are not the type of role models we should be setting up for our
children.
We need to define EQUAL. Equal should mean the same ruler for EVERYONE. No
one gets more or less of EQUAL treatment. No one is more equal or less
equal then I am.
We need to get back to the basics folks. The old..."Do onto others as you
would have them do onto you" might be a good start.
I will be good now..and leave this conversation go offlist or to the table
talk list....
Just my two cents worth..and these days.... that is worth even less.
This is not meant to offend anyone. Illegal immigrants from ANY country are
bad for business and for America.

We need to stop and think about why so many jobs are being exported to
foreign countries. One reason is the very high cost of labor here in the
states. That is brought about by the greed too many Americans. At the same
time we are cheapskates and demand the cheapest price for whatever we buy.
At high union wages GM and Ford simply can not make a car at the prices many
are willing to pay for them. The obvious (but maybe not the right) answer
is find lower priced labor.
Automakers aren't the only ones hurting... Dell, Acer and HP/Compaq are all
importing to keep costs low. So are dozens of other industrial and
technology companies.
"Undocumented guest workers" typically fill those jobs that Americans do not
want to do or will not do. Pick cotton. Pick fruit and vegetables.
Collect your garbage. Clean your sewers. Yes, some do fill jobs that
*could* be done by Americans. But many of those jobs are ones that pay less
than Americans want to earn and more than the illegals ever hoped to earn.
If more Americans would wait til they could save $$$ for marriage, babies,
cars and houses like our parents and grandparents did we would be a better
country. Instead, our parents and grandparents are spoiling the kids
rotten. Giving the kids everything they didn't have as kids. Many high
schoolers drive more expensive cars than I do. They graduate expecting
everything to be given to them like it was before graduation. When it isn't
they blame Wal-Mart or McDonalds for not paying enough to give them the
world. What do they expect when they are half as productive as their
parents are and have a work ethic that puts America to shame.
While I regret the financial pain and suffering that so many are going
through these days I find it hard to sympathize because we have, for the
most part, brought it on ourselves.
End of rant. Further discussion to private email please.
