Hi again ... My Dell computer which was hung up and refused to budge after I
tried to re-install Windows XP ... is now running again .
I still don`t have the DSL up and running ... I`m waiting for the new DSL
Router to arrive ... the bad XP installation took it down and made it an
expensive paper weight ... never to be resurrected again ( frown ) .
Anyway`s ... thank`s to all of you who offered solution`s to help repair the
hung up Windows Operating System ... I made a folder and saved the mail`s from
all of you for future help .
The way I got around the hung up PC was .
I unplugged my PC for one minute to allow it to reset itself ... then I plugged
it back into the wall socket and pressed the start button .
When the power light came on I began to rapidly click the F8 key ... after a
few second`s a DOS window opened with several choice`s ... one of which is " Go
back to the last Windows start up which worked " ... not the exact word`s but
if you ever open this DOS screen you will see it near the bottom of the page .
I chose that one and clicked " Enter " ... and was taken to another page which
asked if I wanted to:
!. Register and reconnect to Internet
2. Reconnect to the Internet without registering
3. Have a Tech support person help me to reconnect to the Internet
I chose #3 .
A new page opened and gave me a toll free number to call ... for you people on
dial-up ... at this point you will have to unplug the telephone line from the
PC and connect it to your phone to make the call .
I was then asked to say or use the telephone keyboard to enter my machine ID
number ... the ID number is right below the long distance number that I called .
I started to punch in the number`s when asked for the first number then the
next number when suddenly I was switched to a real live support tech .
She asked me to tell her the machine ID number`s which I slowly and carefully
did ... then she put me on hold for a few second`s and came back on with my
reconnect numbers which are to be to enter in the box`s for the re-activation
which are from A to G and the number`s she gave me were in group`s of six each
for the proper box`s .
Even though I was not connected to the Internet I found that if I placed my
mouse pointer in the first box and left clicked the cursor was placed into the
first box for me to type the number`s into .
Before I let her go I repeated the number`s back to her to avoid mistake`s ...
then I was told that I could hang up then I was to click the " Next " button at
the bottom of the page .
I did ... and Windows XP opened and loaded my user`s for me to log in .
When I opened a user I found that all of my program`s and file`s were still
there ( Hurray ) .
I did find that I had to grant permission`s for Outlook Explorer and Foxfire to
open before I could open them to get my mail to download to my Inbox .. which I
used NetZero to do .
And some other program`s asked for permission to open as well ... I just took
them one at a time and OK`d the pop-up`s as they opened .
B/T/W ... if you get a tech support with an accent don`t be timid about having
them repeat if you don`t understand them the first time ... I sure did .
So that`s how I got my PC back to a working state .
I hope this information will help you if your PC lock`s up like mine did .
Happy surfing,
Teri Lee
