-=PCTechTalk=- 7-Zip

It's interesting that this topic started just as my frustration with WinZip
began boiling. I've used WinZip forever it seems............and every so
often
they up the Version number and charge a bunch of money for the latest
iteration.
What bugs me is not just the cost - I've now paid for the program several
times......but I don't really see any substantial changes worth paying the
extra
money for!
The thread on 7-Zip caused me to go looking. I found this site and thought it
was very, very helpful:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_file_archivers

I read the review charts extensively and finally decided to do a rather simple
analysis....I assigned a single point for each attribute and added them up.
For
instance, I added one point for each format that a program could read and then
recorded the total. Using this rather simple method, Power Achiever and
Squeeze
got top points at 28 and IZArc was second at 27 points.

Next I looked at the cost and the cost to upgrade, and the revisions history to
see if they were updated often and how much change they had. Between the top
two programs, Squeeze required users to pay for major upgrades -- just like
WinZip!! Additionally, the interface was not very appealing and it didn't have
as much power as Power Achiever. On the other hand, IZArc was FREE <chuckle>
I
ended up deciding to look at IZArc and Power Achiever.

I tried IZArc and it was a straight forward, program that did exactly what it
advertised. The interface was simple and worked well. I guess in the final
analysis I'd simply say it had no panosh (sp?) <chuckle> It was boringly
good!
And free! Did I say FREE!

Next I tried Power Achiever -- I know in a matter of a few keystrokes that this
was the one for me. It has a choice of GUIs, one simple like most programs and
one very modern and advanced looking much like the GUI for the latest MS Word.
It integrates into Office, and does a whole lot more than most programs. It
also has a viewer and you can set it up to automatically scan archives with
your
AV software. They have a lite version the is $23 - the Pro version which I
tested was $32 with NO UPGRADE COSTS!!! Pay once and it's yours for life! I
bought it last night!

Here's the program data:

http://www.powerarchiver.com/

This morning, while writing this, I found a review of zip programs from
PCWorld.
PCWorld ranked Power Achiever a best buy and describes the light version (the
pro version adds several features including Outlook integration):
