-=PCTechTalk=- 3GB or 3.5GB of memory--which is best?

Currently I have all 4 slots filled with 4 512mb sticks. I purchased a 2GB
stick and I planned on taking 2 512mb sticks out so I would have a total of
3GB. But I could just take one 512mb stick out and have 3.5GB. Dell said
this is fine, if any problems with 3.5GB it just wouldn't boot. And since
memory has to be in pairs, I doubt the one 512mb stick would work so my best
bet is not even try 3.5GB? XP 32 bit will see 4GB I think with some used for
memory mapped I/O, ie graphics card. 3.5GB would just not boot and not harm
if not working, is it even worth a try and stick with 3GB?
TIA
Rudy
