Ellen,
It seems to me that your computer is trying to update itself. Most 
automatic updates don't require a reboot of the computer to be 
completely installed, some do. When they do, you get the dialog box 
warning you to save your work and prepare to be logged off. You need to 
set your automatic updates for a day and time that is convenient for you 
and make sure your computer is running at that time.
