Well, probably 80% of users have never heard of Visual Basic and 95% 
have never used it, so that's not really a problem for most people.

I'm sure there are many more programs that are not compatible with OO, 
but i'm also sure that OO is compatible with many more programs than MS 
Office is. In any case, OO only claims to be compatible with and a 
(better) substitute for the main MS Office programs, and Visual Basic is 
not even included in MS Office as far as i know. Then again, i don't 
really know anything about VB.

What do you use VB for? It seems that OO has its own equivalent to VB:

Writer has a full macro language (OOo Basic). It’s not the same as the 
language (VBA) used by MSOffice, but it has the same functionality. A 
recently published book by Andrew Pitonyak, OpenOffice.org Macros 
Explained (from Hentzenwerke), provides an in-depth description of the 
macro language.
