OpenOffice is only a few years old and has according to several of the
above reviews already outstripped Word, for example. Chances are that
we'll soon see the kind of radical change and improvement in the word
processor market that recently happened with browsers

OpenOffice is very compatible with Word, even better than different Word
versions with each other. OO usually can open older Word versions,
which newer Word versions sometimes cannot. OO can also save documents
in the format of older Word versions.

OO can also convert documents to PDF, which MS Office also cannot, and
which many buy extra programs for.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
