Periodically, my fan that draws air from outside the case and blows it into the case makes a terrible noise. I would define it as "squealing." I should replace it, but I am like the man whose roof was leaking - he didn't want to fix the roof when it was raining and he didn't need to when the weather was nice. The fact that my long haired furry cat used to curl up right by the air intake probably added to (or caused) the problem. In any case, the sound is most likely some rotating machinery in your PC. You might be able to pin down the source of the problem by listening and observing.
