At work, we just copy the drive to another drive and put it away as a
backup. If we're short on larger drives, we take the backup drive and
delete all of the junk files and swap file, and then use Partition
Magic to shrink the allocation small enough to fit onto a smaller
drive. For a "standard" configuration, we just pull the drive out, put
a new drive in, copy from a master image, boot up to make sure that it
works, move the documents, etc., over from the original hard drive,
update patches as needed (seems to be a new one every week or so
nowadays), and that's it, takes maybe 2 hours or so.
For a regular user, it's another matter. At home, I generally have
at least 3 partitions, one for Windows, one for data, and one either with a
spare copy of Windows, or which I can put a fresh copy of Windows
onto. Ideally, I only have to back up the data partition, which is
big enough as it is.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
