Hi George,

In Windows 1.x, 2.x, 3.x, and 9x, Windows runs on top of DOS.
Windows NT, 2000, XP, and 2003 have a console-mode window that can be
opened, which also emulates DOS. This emulator supports both Windows
console-mode programs and DOS programs.
In Longhorn, they apparently plan to drop the DOS emulator (it's a
source of security holes, in addition to having its' roots in CP/M,
and thus at least 25 years old), so that only console-mode programs
will run. Note that it's difficult to tell the difference between DOS
programs and console-mode programs by watching them running. You can
usually tell by looking at the properties of the program's icon. A DOS
program will have tabs for Font, Memory, Screen, and Misc. A
console-mode program will have a tab for Font, but not for the others.
I suspect that they will probably continue to surrport batch files,
which are very convenient for some tasks.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
