In any event, not all ZIP files are created equal.  Since the format
is open, a number of programs use their own compression formats which
are not recognized by the original.

The existence of new alternatives with extensions such as ARJ, RAR,
etc., partially defeats the purpose of making ZIP an open format,
since one needs a proprietary viewer simply to see what files are in
the archive.
