It could be a compatibility problem caused by TB update and/or an add-on
(extensions + themes) or an update of an add-on. Try disabling all in
tools > add-ons
Are you having any problems with Thunderbird? Does this problem occur in
only some folders? Try moving an email with a zip attachment to another
folder.
Try rightclicking the folder > properties > rebuild index
Are you compacting regularly? Do you have automatic compacting turned on
here?:

The setting 100 kB has been working well for me ever since i moved stuff
older than a few months out of the folders receiving new mail.

Is that with files you received in TB and then saved on the hard drive?
In other words, have you tried saving a Thunderbird attachment somewhere
else on your hard drive and then opening it with ICEOWS?

Did this start after the recent automatic TB update or an update of a
theme or an extension?

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
