I had some trouble some months ago setting up some scanners with
web-downloaded drivers. I finally realized that the way to make it
work is to install the driver from the CD, then update with the
downloaded version. The downloaded version is not the whole thing,
even though it appears to be.  The problem that I was having was with
HP scanners, as I recall.  Make sure that you're able to open My
Computer without it taking ages.
