Direct cable connection requires that you use either a null modem cable or a
bi-directional parallel cable, connected to both computers serial or
parallel ports, respectively.

If you are going to use a network cable you must connect this to the network
card (or port) and you must use windows networking, NOT direct cable
connection.

Direct cable connection is designed to allow windows networking between two
computers, using serial or parallel ports, where you do not have a
conventional network card in one or both of the machines, for example, if
you have an older laptop without a network card and you want to connect it
to your local network.
