It sounds like there are't enough system resources to render the page. 
That means you either don't have enough RAM or some program is 
misbehaving and using too much RAM or CPU capacity. Try turning on 
Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and options < always on top and 
then doing your experiment again.

It could be a problem with Thunderbird since others on this list have 
reported strange behavior, but we haven't heard back from them, so the 
list doesn't yet know if their problems are "real" Thunderbird problems 
or caused by not compacting enough or completely.

I'll check in the Thunderbird support forum 
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=39 soon to see if this is 
some new bug, but you can ask for help there too if task manager shows 
it's TB that's gobbling up RAM or CPU power.
