Look in the CMOS setup; there's usually an option to turn off onboard
sound, somewhere.

Those are probably just the covers for the connectors. If you look
inside your own computer, you'll see that it's probably very similar.
Take a look at this picture:

It looks like ALL current motherboards have the sound connectors
vertical. I've seen boards with the sound connectors horizontal, but
apparently no one does that anymore. If horizontal, it would probably
share a cover with a game port (probably game port on bottom and sound
on top).
