Yes, it's quite easy, as you found out.

If you found no card, then perhaps they replaced the motherboard,
although I would expect them to have said "we replaced the
motherboard". It may be more confusing for the ignorant (easily
remedied by explaining that the sound card is part of the
motherboard), but it would certainly keep the customer from coming
back mad after hearing the truth from someone more knowledgeable.

Perhaps just the speakers that were dead, not the sound "card"?
