The thing is that all except very advanced users should have their AV's 
autoprotect feature enabled, and this uses the exact same database as 
the manual scan does. So every file is automatically scanned anyhow by 
your AV before it lets you open it. (That's also why email scanning is 
unnecessary, in addition to potentially corrupting or destroying all 
your email...)

So manual scans are in fact more of a gimmick provided, like email 
scanning, by AV manufacturers to make people appreciate their AV more by 
making them realise it's protecting them all the time.

In any case, if you follow the 3+1 rules i posted, you're also protected 
against almost all new viruses that your AV doesn't know about yet, and 
these rules would have prevented almost all infections people ever got 
even if they hadn't had an AV program.
