What happens is that when you edit a file, it is opened in "exclusive"
mode, so that other programs can't (try to) change it at the same
time.
What do you mean, "went back to the document"? If you had it open in
Word, and tried to use some other program with it, it will fail. You
need to close it first before trying to open it in another program.
In some cases, you need to exit the program completely, or, worse
case, restart the computer.
