This is about Overclocking and the Mystic Overclocker
will probably curse me for this, but the system is
very stable at 500MHz, although I'm not going to tempt
fate for very long...

Curse you...?? on the contrary...

I saw the light! About 11:48pm last night, after
reading your comments, I wrote to Tom Pabst,
explaining how I had seen the light and knew he was
right and how wrong I had been, begging him to share
his wisdom on Overclocking. Then, ten minutes later I
received detailed instructions. I have just gone back
online after a night of work. First I got a big role
of black electrician's tape, several pieces of gum
wrapper foil, a hair pin, some solder and my soldering
iron... it was quite tricky... and there is not a lot
of room left now for air flow but after two rolls of
solder, a big wad of chewing gum and some interesting
carving on my PII chip board... I was able to set the
chip to 66mhz and clock it to 8x... now I the system
reports PII-528...

Heat was an issue... but thankfully my neighbor was
out of town for the weekend. I took a few tools over
and removed his under the counter refrigerator from
his bar in the family room. I then just dropped the
whole computer into the fridge, (after drilling a
large hole in the back to feed the cable through), and
set it under my desk. I intend to visit the Hardware
store today and replace his fridge so he will not know
it was missing. Now, the fridge does make a touch more
noise than the computer and I have to move my chair
back about a foot from my desk in order to open the
door to access the CD Rom or floppy drive... but the
computer is real cool now.

I am a bit bleary eyed, after all I have been up all
night. The wife came down stairs this morning and
looked in on me, only to walk away shaking her head.
Seven pots of coffee later... I am still going strong.
A new idea has hit me know... I am considering taking
my chain saw and creating an opening in the floor to
lower the fridge and allow for a flush mount. I am
concerned about the 87 or so wires I soldered into the
CPU and the gum wrapper wedged into the SLOT ONE...
but, it works for now.

My next thought is my video card. If I can accomplish
this, I am thinking I have about a dozen 1mg 30 pin
ram chips left over from the upgrades. I am thinking I
can solder those into a series onto my video card and
double the available video ram. I may need to run the
wires outside the box as the CPU upgrade no longer
allows for anymore room inside the box... but, with
the advent of the fridge cooling system, I can mount
them inside the fridge... oh, it is all so clear to me
know...

OVER CLOCKING... yeah... now that is the ticket!!!!

Back to you later on my attempts to overclock my CD
Rom drive....

Hmm...I think that you've been in the
  liquor locker again ;-)

Liquor..?? now.. now... now...

Actually, after another pot of coffee the idea of
Overclocking my CD Rom made more sense...

I have been out in my yard shed and discovered that my
leaf blower runs at about 22,000rpm... I have the
cover off my CD Rom drive and a big rubber band
stretched to the drive spindle... I think this means I
will need to mount the leaf blower on the outside of
the fridge with an opening through the side for the
rubber band. Right now I have the hot glue gun warming
up here on my desk to attach the leaf blower to the
fridge. If I have it right in my head, with the gear
differential between my leaf blower and the CD Rom
spindle, I should be able to get the baby up to about
65,000 rpm... since it was spinning at 10,000rpm for
40X... I calculate that my CD Rom drive will be a
260X+ drive when I finish... that should make those CD
games just fly....

BTW... the wife and kids left for the day... she was
muttering something about "damn computer geek..."

This is all so clear now... Overclocking.... yeah...
that is the ticket... more later....

BTW... the leaf blower idea never panned out. The CD
ran like a rocket for a while and then it started
sawing it's way through the side of the case... if it
had been diamond edged, it might have made it. The
worse part of that was I ruined a really great leaf
blower and the wife stopped speaking to me until I
moved the refrigerator out from under my desk...
*sigh* ...at least I never cut the hole in the floor
to flush mount it... I would probably be sleeping on
the couch.

This was the last we heard of the Mystic Overclocker.
We will report any further posts from him. You should
also know that we do not allow the Mystic Overclocker
to post to "our" mailing lists as his information is
outside of our usual quality.

Please remember not to try this at home as the Mystic
Overclocker is a Professional and trained in the use
of computer components, (well, maybe).

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
