As long as only one of them is in realtime mode, yes. This is called 
resident shield in AVG and guard in AntiVir. If you're in Windows's safe 
mode, the realtime protection of both is automatically turned off, but 
make sure you first get the newest update in Windows's normal mode 
(doubleclick on the umbrella icon and then click "Start update")
