Yes, AntiVir seems to be the most effective antivirus around at the 
moment, but the free classic version is not enough to protect you 
against spyware. It can get rid of the junk the spyware pulls in, but it 
doesn't necessarily get rid of the spyware. You either have to get the 
pay version of AntiVir or get a free antispyware like Windows Defender 
to complement the free version of AntiVir.

In addition, you can make AntiVir even more powerful by scheduling 
updates every 3 or 4 hours (it provides a lot more than most other 
programs) and by turning on heuristics:
doubleclick the umbrella icon and

1) Scheduler tab < Insert new job < next < update job < daily < set time 
< invisible < finish (repeat and set time 3 hrs later)

2) configuration < expert mode < guard < scan < heuristic(s) < 
macrovirus heuristic(s) + win32 file heuristic(s) < high detection level
