I remember selling quite a few 486 systems with PCI.  I think they were
all "newer" boards that were capable of handling 486-compatible AMD and
Cyrix 586 chips.

As for the Rockwell modem, many of them need software in order to get
full speed, MAYBE even the external ones.  They would have the NMP4 and
NMP% in software, not in firmware, so all error-correction and
data-decompression would be dones AFTER the data got into the computer.
Interesting idea, since you'd have compressed data going from the modem
to the driver.  Nevertheless, since I'm still getting away from DOS (I
can do some things faster in than most people dream of doing them in
Windows), I avoid modems that need software drivers for extra speed or
to function at all.
