I agree with John; why mess with unknown? And, with 31% of the
respondents on the site giving it a thumbs-down, I *know* I wouldn't
want to mess with it. If it doesn't come well-recommended by one or
more sites that I trust, I don't even bother looking at it.

Think your computer is sluggish?  Here's what to do:

1. Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs (or Programs in Vista),
and uninstall everything that you don't use. Don't forget to update
anything that is outdated.

2. Restart the computer, then open CCleaner (www.CCleaner.com) and run both the 
registry
and file sections. Don't forget you'll need to run the registry
section at least twice. Set it to NOT wipe out the prefetch cache;
Windows handles that automatically, and it's needed for the defrag to
work properly.

3. Restart the computer, wait for it to settle down, and then run:
   rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks
This runs all of the internal maintenance stuff.

4. If you have XP or older, then run a defragger.  If you have Vista,
defrag is done automatically by the steps above.

5. If you have XP or older, and have any specific problems, try
running the various tools that are part of Dial-A-Fix; it fixes lots
of odd things. John's favorite, SFC, is included as one of the tools
in DAF. DAF can be used with Vista if you set the XP compatibility
option, but is not intended for it and most features do not work
properly.
