I'm confused; are you saying the computer speeded up or slowed down due 
after compression?

Also, are you saying you initiated the compression or that it happened 
by itself? AFAIK, compression is automatic and on by default in the NTFS 
  version of XP (which you seem to have), and i don't know (i have FAT, 
not NTFS) if it happens all the time for a few files at a time or if it 
starts a major operation and therefore probably first asks for 
permission before monopolising the computer for that for a while.
