I'm afraid so. They address different kinds of problems (maintainance 
and spy ware) so I don't call them useless- just not applicable to this 
in any way.

Just ensure your backup is good before you format. You only have this 
one shot to keep the data, and as mentioned before- don't backup the 
applications, just the information (documents, pictures, email, 
spreadsheets and so on). Things other than your personal data, such as 
programs, have to be re-installed anyway, so don't back those up.
