com.com is the background site for cnet.com / zdnet.com / download.com
/ etc. akamai is a provider that is used as background hosting for a
large number of companies, including Microsoft, if I recall correctly.
If you download a file from Microsoft, it may actually come from
Akamai, and the same for many images that may appear on the page.

I'm using the word "background" because I can't really think of a
better name for it.

After you open IE, what do you do or not do that causes IE to try to
access these sites? Have you checked the default home page?

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
