I don't think you're crazy; i think you're ISP is. They're not only
driving you crazy with incorrect informations or bad instructions,
they're also wasting expensive staff time. If you have that box without
a check mark in any email program on any computer and ever check for
mail, *all* the mail should be deleted from the server. If it's not,
there's probably something wrong with the ISP's server's settings.

Exactly, and it's not in your mailbox on the server. If your ISP says
something else, they're just plain nuts.

I never said that, but you could easily check what mail has been left
there even though you downloaded it or checked for new mail with any
email program without the check mark "leave on server". Then you could
call your ISP and explain what the problem really is when they tell you
nonsense about you having to delete email in your email program.

And if your ISP has a malfunctioning server that doesn't delete
downloaded email when you don't have "leave on server" checked, you can
easily delete that old email in the webmail. You can then decide whether
it's less of a pain having to delete a dozen old emails on the Cox
website once a month or having to teach them where the problem is or
switching to a less chaotic ISP.

When i said you erroneously thought you had to get rid of emails in your
email program to get them out of your ISP's "mailbox", i meant just
that. That was and is erroneous, and there is no way around that, but
the problem is not you; it's your crazy ISP that gives out erroneous
info or incomprehensible instructions.
