I?m looking for help with a problem of shutting down my computer. I?m running
Windows 98 SE, and my computer has automatic shutdown mode (so there?s no
on/off switch on it). Now sometimes when I shutdown the computer shuts down
but doesn?t power down. It continues running, but the monitor screen is
blank. So the only way to get the computer off is to pull the plug out. Now a
problem with booting up has started. Sometimes the computer will power up, but
nothing will happen ? the hard drive engages a bit, but nothing really
happens. Sometimes it boots up, but then it seems that the signal to the
monitor is shut off, as the computer runs, monitor is on, but nothing showing.
The computer doesn?t respond to the keyboard. Sometimes in booting up the
computer, the screen goes ?stripey? (parallel lines) and then blank and the
computer stops booting up. Sometimes there is just a long beep. In all of
these instances I have to pull the plug out to switch the computer off.
Sometime I can get the computer booted up, I?ve check the system devices etc,
and everything looks fine on it.

So could this be a problem with the hardware, software, or maybe both?? Your
help is much appreciated!

Yours
Scott
