Make sure that the speakers are plugged into the sound "card" jack,
not the jack (if any) on the modem.
Are you sure that the speakers are actually good? Do you get hum and
click noises when you crank them all the way up and unplug/plug the
speaker jack? If not, there may be a speaker problem. Perhaps
lightning fried the speakers and the sound card.
