    Last point first, that this 'may be fairly permanent, then go for the
router.  My question in the first place was mainly based on something that
was only going to be around for  a few days or weeks.

Secondly,  if you have your 95  and XP machines setup with the same
workgroup name and set to accept DHCP (basically no settings in the
networking area) and drives shared, (right click on hdd and select share -
easy in 95 which is the way you want to share anyway) then when you plug in
your router it will automatically connect the two computers together.

When I build up new computers with XP and plug them into our network to
download the updates from the internet, it picks up all our computers in the
store and all our printers that are on the network.  XP is great for setting
up networking.

If you have 10/100 cards then you can transfer at 100 mbs.  Most broadband
will be between 120 to 340 kbs.  You can go up to 1mbs. which is very rare.
So even if you only send at 10 mbs machine to machine you will be over 10
times faster.  If you transfer at 100 mbs then you will be about 100 times
faster.  I think, as a guess, that that is about 1000 times faster than a
floppy!!

I don't know how big of files you scan, but that will be a significant
savings on 'coffee time'.  (sitting around waiting) no matter what.
