Here is how to tell if a cable is crossover or not.

Hold one end in each hand, and put them next to each other so that both 
cables are pointing down, and you can see the coloured (for the Yanks 
Colored) wires going into the plug.  If the order of both sets of wires in 
the 2 plugs from left to right is the same, then you have a straight 
through cable for the router.  (For instance you might see green white 
yellow red).  If two of them are in swapped order, and the rest are the 
same, then you have a crossover cable, and can connect the PC's together 
with it.

If you can't see the wires of course this won't help - but on most of them 
you can, for this reason.
