I have noticed them too. The reason is unclear, but I can tell you that
messages sent for moderation will take longer than others, since they
require personal attention. The most common cause of that is Overquoting.
Other factors would include the fact that Freelists now hosts hundreds
of other active lists. The rate of message processing therefore depends
greatly on server capacity and how many messages are being submitted at
any time. There could also be intermittent delays on the internet
backbone or problems affecting the email server at your end. Such things
are beyond our control. One good thing about all this is the increased
activity of the list. There is a lot of good stuff happening here, which
may inadvertently contribute to such things by adding extra load to the
system.
