Depends on the extent of the damage. Norton Disk Doctor could recover a
FAT in FAT16 systems. Modern tools are Windows based, so to begin with
you probably need to put the drive into another machine as a secondary
master. This way you can apply repair tools to it. Usually, there are 2
copies of the FAT. Recovery depends on having the second one intact. If
it isn't, you have to re-partition and format again to set it up.

This approach also helps prevent virus contamination because of not
attempting to boot from the infected drive.
