You said that one program was able to find a couple of files... which
means there's SOMETHING there.

DOD wiping requires 3 passes, with different patterns.  For all
practical purposes, though, a single pass is sufficient, and if a
couple of files were found, it apparently wasn't even THAT thorough.

If you have a disk editor, you might want to look at the drive
directly, to see what it looks like.  I remember, in the MFM drive
days, I'd sometimes come across drives from which nothing could be
recovered.  On a surprising number of them, it turned out that one bit
in each word was forced on or forced off.  So, the data was there, but
there was a mechanical problem of some kind, such as a broken pin on
the connector.  Sometimes, knowing what the data looks like on the
drive helps with figuring out what the cause of the problem is, which
in turn helps with finding a solution.
