PCX files are uncompressed image data. However, the PCX format is
also quite old, created in the days when hard drives were 20M and
floppy drives were 360K; it may not support images that large.

No, files get deleted by changing the first byte of the file name, and
unmarking all of the associated clusters in the FAT. In the
corruption that I describe above, one bit in each byte of every file
is set to 0. This is NOT something that any program can fix.
Does your wireless router keep security logs? If so, you might want
to save them immediately, before they get overwritten.
