I.e it's good to know that one can send a total of at most about 1500
characters, not counting spaces, (depending on the variable number of
headers) without having to bother you and without running the risk of
the posting being delayed when you're sleeping or not staring at the
computer for some other flimsy reason. This can be important in the case
of someone needing quick help.
E.g. my message consisted of 4214 characters (without spaces) in the
message itself plus 3067 in the headers and 405 in the list signature,
making a total of 7686.
BTW, in case some people haven't figured this out, John's time in New
Zealand is 13 hours ahead of Greenwich, i.e. his nighttime is from about
11:00 to 20:00 GMT (UTC). Since most people in the US have trouble
understanding 24h time (and other international things :-) ), this info
is probably only helpful for non-US list members, and i should add that
this means about 6 AM to 3 PM local time in New England.
So during those times, if it's an urgent message, refrain from writing
novels and be especially careful to enter comments *after* relevant
quoted lines so that each block of quoted lines is less than 30 lines
(and remove all unnecessary lines). During those times, it's also polite
to not ask why a message has not been posted and to not resend it if
it's not urgent because John can't have had a chance to moderate it.
These are the most helpful sites i've found for help with time zones:
http://www.worldtimezone.com/
http://www.worldtime.com
http://www.worldtimeserver.com
The first one is the best i've found for simultaneously showing current
time in all zones simultaneously. Has anyone found anything better?

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
