You don't know that it was Excel which froze your computer; it could
have been something in the background.

On all modern computers, holding in the power button for several
seconds *should* turn it off.  If it refuses to turn off even after
holding for several seconds (10 seconds should be more than enough to
get results), then you'll need to disconnect the power; in the case of
a laptop, you may need to unplug the battery.

Computer manufacturers don't make a habit of telling you this because
their computers don't have problems.
