This does not have to be a hard drive fault. Occasionally it is caused 
by a dying capacitor in the power supply. That makes the power slow to 
come up. Once the system makes demands on it, the voltage drops and 
parts malfunction (often accompanied by sudden shutdown. Probably a sick 
power supply.
