Inkjet printers are not well-suited for storage.
You should print something (in both black and color) at least once a
month, to keep the printheads from drying up. Then, be sure that you
turn the printer off properly before unplugging it, so that the head
is properly locked in place on the rubber seals.
Lexmark and HP printers aren't a real problem, since the printhead is
part of the cartridge in most of them, and the cartridge is easily
replaced if the head is clogged with dry ink, but for printers that
generally have built-in or semi-built-in printheads, such as Epson and
Canon printers, it's critical to keep the ink fresh in the head. For
about the price (including shipping) that you can get a new printhead
installed (even for semi-built-in printheads), you can probably buy a
new printer of equivalent or better performance.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
