I guess you mean ntbtlog.txt in Windows, which is surprisingly small,
especially compared to my own computer, which seems to have major
problems with many drivers. What can one do about that?

No recurring errors in the event log.

I took the sick laptop home with me in a hurry and forgot to take the CD
with me. Is it a bad idea to temporarily copy the i386 folder from my CD
to the other laptop to enable SFC? Interestingly i was able to run SFC
already once a while ago without needing the CD; apparently some
antimalware has since removed some files from the dllcache.

Great! The firewall is working again! Interestingly my own computer
doesn't even have such a key.

I knew this would be easy to solve for you even though there are dozens
of tech forums full of discussions with "experts" not being able to help
people complaining that the programed and manual WinsockFix stuff
doesn't work. Almost nobody seems to know about gpedit, and those that
do don't know it's not on XP Home.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
