[pchelpers] Re: html / outlook

Hi Re-Na,

After some tinkering, I was able to get the original message
(partially-quoted below) to open in Windows Mail (the Vista
replacement for Outlook Express), which means it didn't get corrupted
on the way to her. I didn't see anything wrong from visual inspection,
either.

This is not an HTML email; it's a standard email message in
internet-standard MIME format with a file attached; MIME format is
used for file attachments, and HTML emails are treated by MIME as an
attachment. Whatever the problem is, it's not HTML-related, but rather
seems to be related to Outlook 2007's handling of MIME. The only thing
that I can think of offhand is that maybe she fiddled with some of the
settings. Is she using Outlook 2007? I opened Outlook 2007, and
looking through it but didn't see anything that I thought might affect
viewing emails. Outlook 2007 doesn't look much different from prior
versions of Outlook.

I did some hunting and found this page, which indicates that Outlook
2007 seems to have at least one bug relating to MIME conversion, which
works fine under Outlook 2003:
http://bugzilla.zimbra.com/show_bug.cgi?id=19926

With this in mind, you might ask on that list for responses to find
out if other recipients got the attachment ok, with a particular
interest in replies from people using Outlook 2007 (or whatever) on
Vista.

I'm sure that there have been some patches for Outlook 2007; you might
have her check to see if she's up-to-date on them, by going to
"Control Panel", and then clicking "Check for Updates" under
"Security". I'd suggest having her visit
http://secunia.com/software_inspector also (she'll need Sun Java, from
http://www.java.com installed for this).
