How does your friend know that he's being attacked? What's happening?
Sometimes things that appear to be "hacking" is actually just normal
 background "noise".

I don't have a firewall here (well, I have WinXP's built-in firewall,
but it doesn't do much because...) but my computer is on a local
network, sharing a cable modem with several other computers. My
computer has a private IP address on the network; by design, private
IPs cannot be used on the Internet, which means that my computer
cannot be reached from the outside; all contacts have to be initiated
by my computer. This is a cheap and effective way to firewall a
computer, although certain things become difficult for me to do.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
