I found that after installing IE7, I usually had to go into Internet
Options, Advanced tab, and restore everything to defaults.
Most of the problems were with the sites, not with IE 7 itself. Some sites
were doing things that they shouldn't have (not if they were honest
businesses), and others were simply too IE6-specific. Due to IE7's pop-up
blocker, most sites have stopped doing pop-ups. Some sites specifically ask
you to turn off your pop-up blocker, which immediately makes me suspicious.

Basically you should understand that there's a big difference between
upgrading (i.e. new versions with new gimmicks and bells and whistles
that are almost always unnecessary) and updating (fixing problems by
getting hotfixes for or newer releases of the same versions). You should
especially understand the big difference between non-critical and
critical (i.e. security) updates. For example, Word 97 is as good as
Word 2007, but it's a very bad idea using any version of Word without
the updates provided for that version.
You're right that MS has a tendency to send out even critical updates
that don't work or break your computer or have security holes that
require new critical updates. That doesn't mean you shouldn't get all
critical updates; the only choice you really have is to wait a few days
to make sure the worst problems have been ironed out. IE 7 was a
critical update, so i'm always quite shocked when i hear about people
who didn't get it yet.
Basically, it's very easy to tell which are critical updates and which
aren't by going to Microsoft Update http://update.microsoft.com and
Microsoft Office Update http://office.microsoft.com/ and getting all
critical updates (now stupidly renamed high-priority updates in the MS
tradition of keeping customers confused).
I don't think there ever were any real problems with IE7, only with
people trying to install it and SP2 on infected computers.

I use it very rarely because it's not nearly as safe as Firefox, but i
haven't had any problems using it and don't remember hearing of any by
others. Well, the changed UI and menus and stuff are of course the usual
totally unnecessary and frustrating pain MS likes to annoy its customers
with, but i haven't heard about technical problems in IE7.
