Maybe not. It's possible the IDE cable is loose, or the contacts are
dirty. Take the ribbon cable off and spray with a little contact
cleaner. Replace the cable if possible. If more than one drive is
connected, take them one at a time and make sure the BIOS re-establishes
the presence of the drives. Save all settings and once the drives come
back, run a hardware testing program (checkit etc) to see that all is
well.

Once you are satisfied, do a thorough Scandisk test to repair any errors
and let us know what you discover.
