[pchelpers] getting AntiVir updates

All the ones i saw suggested solutions, but unfortunately not all people
post back once their problem has been fixed. I compiled the different
solutions and improved them a bit below, and i'll post this in the forum
too.

Yes, most update problems seem to be caused by server overloads, which
is not surprising considering the fast rise in popularity of this
program. AVG had similar problems when it was first made popular in
computer magazines. It's understandable that they don't immediately
invest a lot in new servers for the free version, but the problems are
old enough to warrant the suspicion that they want this problem to
continue in a noticeable but not major way to convince people to switch
to the pay version. (This has no bandwidth problems on its reserved
servers.)

There is however also a program glitch in AntiVir that seems to be
affecting not all but quite a few people that is at least sometimes
caused by lack of compatibility with download managers and some user
account issues (installation without administrator rights etc.). This
sometimes prevents "only" automatic updates but sometimes even manual ones.

Once the glitch has been fixed, you can again make AntiVir automatically
check for updates as often as you want (on AntiVir's scheduler tab). I'd
suggest every 3 hours.

Solution #1

Download a new copy of AntiVir from www.free-av.com, uninstall the one
you have, reboot the computer (very important!) run CCleaner
(www.ccleaner.com) as described below, reboot the computer (very
important!), and install the new copy.

CCleaner: Run both the temp file cleaner (cleaner < run cleaner) and the
registry cleaner (issues < scan for issues < fix selected issues > yes
for backup [can be deleted in a few days if no problems] < fix all
selected issues < OK < close). Run the registry cleaner as often as
necessary until no issues are found.

Solution #2

If that doesn't help, try this:
start < run < services.msc < OK < rightclick AntiVir PersonalEdition
Classic Scheduler < properties < general tab < startup type: automatic <
recovery tab < "restart the service" in all three failure boxes.

Solution #3

Only if that still doesn't work and if you're unable to update by
rightclicking on the umbrella icon next to the clock, follow these
instructions, which also provide a workaround to make this manual update
automatic at least once a day:

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
