Pity, it could be the trash was set to automatically delete anything put 
there. You could right click on the trash folder (recycle bin) and click 
properties.

Alternatively, if you deleted messages within Thunderbird, it likely 
moved them to the trash folder. Depending on its settings, those files 
could still be there.
