I strongly suggest trying to rename *and* move test folders you create 
for this purpose with *copies* of emails from other folders. It's 
important to know if this was a temporary problem caused by forgetting 
to compact after renaming a folder (and after any other strange 
behavior) or if you have a major corruption in your mail (profile) folder.

You never explained what happened when you tried to rename. Looks like 
you may need to make a new profile anyhow, especially if your 
Thunderbird is behaving as badly as this one:
