[pchelpers] Re: exciting "new" free security programs

Nice list - I will try some of these. Had Comodo firewall before I had the
router, and I really liked it.

I've discovered, rediscovered, or for the first time finally tried out
the following antivirus, antispyware, antiphishing, heuristic malware
detection, and firewall programs that are all the best or among the best
in addition to being free as in gratis and some even free as in freedom
(open source):

Tech-Protect www.tech-pro.net/tech-protect.html in conjunction with
ClamWin (= Clam AntiVirus for Windows). The most exciting thing i
discovered is that Clam is better than most if not all not only free but
also pay versions of commercial antivirus programs.

from www.informationweek.com/software/opensource/166400446 :
Antivirus Tools: Clam AV Is The Best -- But Where Are The Rest?

A major app service provider discovers that a well-known, open-source
anti-virus tool beats the pants off its commmercial competition. And
while it proves just good open-source development can get, it also
raises some disquieting questions about the state of the security
software market.
...
We also wanted to examine evidence about how different antivirus vendors
were faring, so the company bought test licenses from the major vendors
and watched the results during each virus outbreak. Electric Mail
processes more than 10 million e-mail messages day, enabling analysts to
see a representative sample of viruses in the wild.
...
Our tests have run since the beginning of May and in that time Clam's
response time has been equal to or better than the major vendors most of
the time, a result we found to be very surprising. However, it is
corroborated by the German test site " PC WELT.DE "

The PC WELT site results demonstrated that for one Sober variant, Clam
Anti-Virus had the first patch in place with well-known Symantec
releasing a patch a full nine hours later. Most of the other vendors
fared better, but were hours behind Clam. Nine hours of an unchecked
virus in the wild could mean 2 or 3 million of our customers' e-mail
messages were not protected from this virus, which is totally unacceptable.

And in case someone still has doubts about the quality and security of
an open source security program, here's more info:
http://www.emailbattles.com/2005/08/31/virus_aabejfhaib_ag/

Comodo BOClean www.comodo.com/products/free_products.html
probably the best of the only three available free antispyware programs
with real-time protection.

Comodo Verification Engine www.comodo.com/products/free_products.html
antiphishing protection

Comodo Firewall www.comodo.com/products/free_products.html

WinPatrol www.winpatrol.com/download.html
As explained on that website:
WinPatrol uses a heuristic behavioral approach to detecting attacks and
violations of your computing environment. Traditional security programs
scan your hard drive searching for previously identified threats.
WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts
you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You'll be
removing dangerous new programs while others prepare to update their
definition/signiture data files.
