I ran into a problem somewhat similar to this on a hub (your router is
probably a switch, not a hub). After much confusion on my part, I
discovered that one patch cable had gotten mashed, shorting some wires
somehow, and bringing down the entire network. Unplugged that one
cable and everything started working ok.
